Top 10 Lists: one of the most beloved traditions at chapter, regional, or international events. A Top 10 List is when a group of AZAs and/or BBGs come together to rank something from least to best, with no questions asked. A leader stands at the front of the room, sharing the list out loud while counting on their fingers. People are shouting out answers and laughing while disagreeing with each other as time passes. This tradition has been passed and is a cherished part of BBYO culture. Traditions hold a special place in Jewish culture, helping to connect us to our roots.

One such tradition is the Yiddish language, which, sadly, is becoming less commonly spoken. It’s important for us to continue using Yiddish words so we can carry on the rich traditions of our ancestors. With that in mind, here’s my Top 10 list of Yiddish words you cannot go a day without saying!

10) Schlep (שלעפּן)
- Meaning: To carry or drag something, with effort

9) Mensch (מענטש)
- Meaning: A person of integrity, honor, and kindness

8) Chutzpah (חוצפּה)
- Meaning: Audacity or nerve; boldness

7) Schmooze (שמועסן)
- Meaning: To chat in a friendly, informal way, often to gain favor or network

6) Klutz (קלאָץ)
- Meaning: A clumsy person

5) Bubbe (באָבע)
- Meaning: Grandmother; also used affectionately to refer to an elderly woman

4) Nosh (נאַשן)
- Meaning: A light snack or to eat a snack casually

3) Oy vey (אוי װײ)
- Meaning: An expression of dismay, frustration, or exasperation; similar to "Oh no!" or "Oh dear!"

2) Tchotchke (טשאַטשקע)
- Meaning: A small trinket or decorative item, often without much value

1) Schmutz (שמוץ)
- Meaning: Dirt, grime, or a smudge

With these words in mind, I encourage you to add them into your daily vocabulary! Not only are they fun and easy to use, but they’re also a great way to keep one of our most cherished traditions alive - Yiddish! So go ahead, start schmoozing, noshing, and using a little chutzpah, and before you know it, you'll be speaking like a true mensch. Just don’t forget to call your Bubbe!
